If you're going to do deadlifts, do Romanian ones. Conventional deadlifts use a wider range of muscles, but they have a larger range of motion and put more strain on the lower back, so I haven't seen anyone do them properly without proper training. The saying "deadlifts hurt your back" comes from conventional deadlifts. With Romanian deadlifts, you only need to lower the bar to about knee level, and instead of bending your upper body, you should think of pushing your hips back, feeling the stretch in your glutes and hamstrings, and only lower it until you feel any pain in your lower back. When lifting the barbell, you should start from the bar resting on your knees rather than pulling it from the ground. The fitness trend is gradually moving away from deadlifts, but if you're going to do them, Romanian deadlifts are the way to go.
