This exercise can be done with a Smith machine, making it especially easier for beginners!

How to

Starting Position

1. Set the barbell at the highest point on the Smith Machine. 2. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and slightly bend your knees. 3. Grasp the barbell with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. 4. Keep your back flat and your core engaged.

Proper Form

1. Begin by slowly lowering the barbell down to your midsection. 2. Keep your back flat and core engaged throughout the movement. 3. Drive your elbows back and squeeze your shoulder blades together as you pull the barbell up towards your chest. 4. Slowly lower the barbell back to the starting position.

Breathing Technique

1. When you lower the barbell, inhale deeply. 2. As you pull the barbell up, exhale forcefully.

Precautions

1. Do not round your back while performing the exercise. 2. Do not jerk the barbell up quickly. 3. Make sure to keep your core engaged and your back flat throughout the entire exercise.
