Muscles Dumbbell Squat Works
Muscles used
- Quadsfront of the thighs from above the knees toward the hips
- Glutesthe large muscles that make up your butt
- Hamstringsback of the thigh from the glutes to behind the knee
- Coremuscles around the abs, lower back, and pelvis
- Forearmslower arms from the elbows to the wrists
- Erector spinaelong muscles running along both sides of the spine
Main muscleHold dumbbells at your sides, squat down, then stand up as your knees and hips extend together. The main muscles are your quads and glutes. Your quads straighten your knees, and your glutes extend your hips to lift you.
Supporting musclesYour hamstrings assist hip extension, your core keeps your torso from collapsing, and your forearms help hold the dumbbells.
How it should feelAs you push through your whole foot, your quads and glutes should tighten together. Your torso should stay steady even while holding the dumbbells.
Signs you're offIf your knees cave in or your torso folds forward, leg and glute tension will drop. If the dumbbells pull your shoulders forward, your posture may become unstable.
Remember thisHold the dumbbells steady at your sides and stand by extending your knees and hips together.
